Taiwan is located east of the Taiwan Strait, off the south-eastern coast of mainland China. Separated from the Asian continent by the Taiwan Strait, it is neighbour to the main islands of Japan to the northeast, Ryukyu Islands of Japan directly to the east and the Philippines to the south. The mountainous island spans across the Tropic of Cancer and is covered by tropical and subtropical vegetation.
