Culturally and historically rich, Italy lies in the south of the European continent. It is home to 58.1 million people and occupies a peninsula that extends into the central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. The country shares its northern, Alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within the Italian Peninsula and Campione d’Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. Italy enjoys a predominantly Mediterranean climate - Alpine in far north but hot and dry in the south.
