Indonesia comprises more than 17,000 islands that stretch over five thousand miles along both sides of the equator. It is the world’s third-largest democracy, the world's largest archipelagic state, and with a population of around 230 million people, is the world's fourth most populous country. It is also home to the world's largest Muslim population.

The five largest islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo), New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea), and Sulawesi. The Malay Peninsula and Indochina are situated to the north-west, and the continent of Australia lies due south.
