The birthplace of Islam, Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Arabian Peninsula. It borders Egypt on the northwest, Iraq on the north and northeast, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates on the east, Oman on the southeast, and Yemen on the south.
The kingdom, a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, is an absolute monarchy. It is also home to roughly one-quarter of the world's oil reserves and, as the world's leading oil producer and exporter, plays a dominant role in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
