Globalisation and the Need for Strategic Alliances

Over the past two decades, the twin forces of technology and falling barriers to trade and investment have led to the emergence of a ‘global village’, with technology serving as the great facilitator and motivator. This increasingly interlinked and competitive business environment has resulted in alliances, defined as close collaborative relationship between two, or more, firms with the intent of accomplishing mutually compatible goals that would be difficult for each to accomplish on its own, becoming more widespread and critical.

International Partners (iPartners) Programme
To facilitate the formation of such strategic alliances, IE Singapore started the International Partners (iPartners) programme in October 2003 to encourage Singapore-based companies to band together to compete more effectively overseas. The iPartners programme facilitates and supports the formation, development and go-to-market phases of alliances for overseas expansion.

By banding together, Singapore-based companies combine their resources and complement their product offerings to achieve economies of scale, reduced time-to-market and are better able to pursue bigger projects. Forming strategic alliances thus helps companies to sharpen their competitiveness and maximise their chances of success when venturing abroad.

To promote such win-win partnerships between Singapore-based companies, the iPartners programme facilitates and supports the formation, developmental and go-to-market phases of the alliances.

Brief Description of an iPartners Project
An iPartners alliance consists of one Anchor Company and several Alliance Partners. The companies in the alliance will formulate an alliance business plan and contribute resources and management support to execute the plan. An iPartners Business Development Manager will champion the goals of the alliance and lead in the execution of the alliance business plan.
